Abstract
Condensate is a liquid hydrocarbon by-product from natural gas processing at CNG Plant Bangkanai
that supports the 155 MW Bangkanai Gas Engine Power Plant (PLTMG). With daily production
averaging 150-200 liters continuously accumulating and limited storage capacity of 160,000 liters. This
study aims to evaluate the utilization of condensate as an alternative fuel for generator sets as a solution
to prevent overflow while generating useful energy. The methodology purification treatment to improve
combustion quality, and operational testing on modified gasoline generator sets. Laboratory results
show condensate has a high heating value of 45.4079 MJ/kg but contains impurities including sulfur
(68.34 ppm wt) and mercury (5.0 μg/kg) that require treatment. Purification methods applied include
settling/filtration for particulate removal and carburetor optimization for improved air-fuel ratio.
Operational testing on a 7.5 kW generator set for 11 hours demonstrated stable performance with fuel
consumption averaging 3.48 L/hour, combustion efficiency of 76%, and NOx emissions of 0 ppm.
Economic analysis indicates that utilizing condensate at the current consumption rate effectively offsets
daily production (83.52 L/day consumption vs 150-200 L/day production), preventing overflow while
the existing 130,000-liter stock can provide electricity for approximately 1,556 days (4.26 years). This
utilization offers a sustainable solution for condensate management, preventing environmental risks
from overflow, generating alternative energy at CNG Plant Bangkanai.
