Abstract

This research designs and builds a prototype of a vehicle tracking and immobilizer system that can operate independently on the 70 cm frequency band using LoRa technology. This system aims to be a backup solution to the reliance on cellular networks and the vulnerability to Global Positioning System (GPS) jamming. The prototype, consisting of a vehicle unit and a tracking unit (base station), has been successfully developed. It implements a binary communication protocol secured with digital signature authentication and timestamp validation to prevent attacks from unauthorized parties. Field testing in a dense urban environment shows excellent performance, with a functional communication range reaching 12 kilometers in a high-rise-to-ground configuration and 1.4 kilometers in a ground-to-ground configuration under worst-case conditions. The module can also be tracked without GPS data by performing Radio Direction Finding (RDF) using standard amateur radio foxhunting equipment.
