Abstract
Indonesia has vast solar energy potential, yet its utilization remains limited, particularly in thermal-based applications. One promising method to harness solar energy in thermal form is through a solar pond system, which stores solar heat in water layers based on salinity stratification. This study aims to assess the potential of solar ponds as a thermal-based electricity source in urban areas, using the campus lake of Institut Teknologi PLN in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, as a case study. This research employs a quantitative method based on technical simulation, with data obtained through field observation and secondary solar radiation data. The analysis includes water storage capacity, physical pond parameters, estimated stored thermal energy, and the potential for energy conversion into electricity. The findings show that a pond with an area of 2,581 m² and an average depth of 1.5 meters can store up to 225 MWh of thermal energy per cycle. Assuming 52 storage cycles annually and a system efficiency of 40%, the realistically usable thermal energy reaches approximately 4,683 MWh per year. This study indicates that solar ponds offer significant potential as a sustainable energy solution in urban environments, particularly as a heat source for Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power generation systems. However, system optimization for salinity stratification, thermal conversion efficiency, and operational challenges such as weather variability and heat dissipation require further investigation.
