Abstract

Pico-hydro power plants (PHPP) are a small-scale renewable energy system that relies on water flow as the primary driver for turbines. However, one of the main challenges in this system is the decrease in efficiency when water flow is reduced. To address this issue, this study explores the hybridization of MHPP with springs as an additional drive mechanism on the shaft. The purpose of adding springs is to optimize turbine rotation by providing supplementary mechanical energy to improve system performance. The testing results show that under the condition without springs, the system generated a voltage of 38.7 V, current of 0.144 A, power of 5.57 W, and a speed of 341 RPM. When tested with one spring, the performance decreased to 32.1 V, 0.120 A, 3.85 W, and 321 RPM. In contrast, with the addition of two springs, significant improvements were observed with a voltage of 46.4 V, current of 0.172 A, power of 7.98 W, and speed of 360 RPM. The best results were achieved with a variation of four springs, resulting in 49.5 V, 0.183 A, 9.06 W, and 373 RPM. From the comparison of these data, it can be concluded that the use of two and four springs is more efficient than the system without springs, as the symmetric placement of the springs enhances shaft motion, reduces counteracting torque, and increases speed and overall system efficiency
