Abstract
The province of Riau has great potential to generate electricity from palm oil biomass waste, such as empty fruit bunches, shells, and fibers. The objective of this study is to identify suitable locations for the construction of a Biomass Power Plant, assess how the integration of the Biomass Power Plant affects voltage fluctuations in the 20 kV distribution network, and analyze power losses and changes in power flow at the substation under various integration scenarios. For power flow simulations, the PSS SINCAL 21.5 software was used on the Riau regional power system. Two integration scenarios were tested. The first scenario utilized the PLTBm at its maximum capacity according to technical specifications, while the second scenario adjusted the generator output power to maintain voltage within a tolerance of +5% of the nominal value. The simulation results showed that in the first scenario, the voltage on the secondary side of the power plant transformer increased to 117%–128% of the nominal value, which could cause overvoltage. In the second scenario, the generator output power was reduced to maintain the voltage within the tolerance limits. In the first scenario, PLTBm power losses exceeded 10% for some units. However, in the second scenario, power losses for all units were less than 5%. Additionally, PLTBm integration reduced the percentage of
transformer loading at the substation. Furthermore, the power flow from the substation to the grid also decreases. Thus, adding PLTBm to the 20 kV distribution system in the Riau region can increase power supply and reduce the load on the substation transformer
