Abstract
The substation is a vital component in the electricity system that functions as a link between the generator and the distribution network, but the presence of birds perching or nesting on the equipment, which has the potential to cause short circuits, damage to insulators, accumulation of corrosive dirt, to the risk of blackouts and economic losses. This study aims to design and implement a prototype of an automatic bird repellent based on PIR sensors and ultrasonic sensors integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology to reduce bird disturbances at the Wates Substation. The method used includes hardware design with an ESP32 microcontroller as the main controller, a PIR sensor to detect bird movement, an ultrasonic sensor to measure distance, and an ultrasonic buzzer as a repellent actuator, with IoT connectivity through the Blynk application for real-time remote monitoring. The test results show that the PIR sensor is able to detect bird movement with an accuracy of 92.5%, while the repellent system using an ultrasonic buzzer is effective up to 87.2% at a maximum distance of 4 meters. In conclusion, this prototype effectively detects and repels birds automatically, is energy efficient, and has the potential to be a reliable alternative solution for reducing bird disturbances at substations.
