Abstract

The increasing popularity of mountain hiking in remote areas demands a reliable and selfsustaining monitoring device. This study aims to design and develop an emergency charging system powered by solar panels for an Internet of Things (IoT)-based mountain hiker monitoring prototype. The system utilizes a 5V solar panel as the primary energy source, two 2500 mAh Li-ion batteries for energy storage, and key components such as ESP32, DHT11, INA219, GPS, LoRa SX1278, and the TP4056 charging module. Field testing was conducted in mountainous areas under varying weather and time conditions. The results show that the system is capable of fully charging the batteries within approximately 6–7 hours under optimal sunlight conditions, with a peak power output of 4.59 W. The average operational duration without sunlight reached 13 hours, with a system power consumption of around 1.42 W. The TP4056 module effectively prevents overcharging, while INR-type batteries were proven to be more stable than IMR-type in maintaining temperature and voltage stability. The system successfully monitors environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, GPS location) and power status in realtime through the LoRa network. This research demonstrates that a solar-powered emergency charging system can serve as an effective and eco-friendly energy solution for communication and safety needs during mountain expeditions in remote areas.
