Abstract

Skin effect due to the presence of harmonic currents can cause various resistance values for one conductor according to the harmonic component that occurs. This paper presents the effects of harmonics distorted current against the current carrying capacity (CCC) of the conductor. This correlation has been proven by simulation and experiment using four different cables cross section, those are All Aluminum Alloy Conductor (AAAC) 35 7/2.5, AAAC 50 7/3, AAAC 70 19/2.25, and AAAC 150 37/2.25. This work aimed to obtain value of harmonics distorted current and its impact to CCC of the conductor. Conductor resistances due to skin effects caused by harmonic currents have different values for different harmonic order. The increase in conductor resistance percentage due to skin effects that created by the harmonic current will be higher as the increase of harmonic order. In larger conductor cross-sectional area, the skin effect due to harmonic current is felt more and the steepness of the resistance increment curve is higher, and vice versa. By this work, it can be found that for conductors with cross sections less than and equal to 50 mm2, the conductor resistance value is not affected by harmonics.
