Abstract

In electrical power installations, especially in high or extra high voltage installations, the role of the equipment protection system is vital to ensure the safety of the installation due to system faults. Busbar is the main part in substation which need to be protected. One of the protection schemes is bus bar protection (BBP) system. Ideally, every substation has busbar protection, but due to several reasons, often, the busbar protection at a substation is not installed or installed but inactive. To deal with that problem, GOOSE message is used to develop as BBP system. IEC61850 goose massage-based BBP can be implemented by designing specific additional logic and signal. Compared to BBP with the existing scheme, which are high impedance and low impedance types, this new system has several advantages, including operating flexibility, implementation time, and installation costs. Only the operating time has a slightly longer time than the usual system, where the GOOSE for BPP's operating time is 100ms, while the regular BBP is Oms. This method already implemented at Bekasi 150kV Substation and shows good stability in discriminating whether external or busbar fault. However, a new scheme can be an alternative solution for the absence of a BBP at a substation so that the bus bar protection system of the substation is still provided. With Busbar Protection based on GOOSE Message, busbar disturbances can be localized quickly, around 100ms. Thus, increasing the reliability of the busbar protection system and reducing the risk of widespread blackouts.
