Abstract

The reliability of electrical distribution is a crucial factor, yet it is often constrained by faults in the Medium Voltage Cable System (SKTM), particularly at the jointing components. This research aims to analyze the effect of the temperature value of an XLPE cable connector on the reliability of electrical distribution using the thermography method. This study employed an experimental laboratory methodology, which included temperature rise tests at currents of 150 A and 350 A, contact resistance measurements, material composition analysis, and microstructure observation using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results indicated a non-uniform temperature distribution, with hotspots identified on the connector with less precise installation quality. The Phase R connector exhibited the highest temperature, reaching up to 108.5°C , and the highest post-heating contact resistance value of 0.0208 mΩ. A direct correlation was found between installation quality, contact resistance value, and temperature rise. It is concluded that the high temperature on the connector, influenced by contact resistance, significantly has the potential to decrease the reliability of the distribution system by serving as an early indicator of failure.
